Airbrushing Tips: “No‑Cap” Painting And Interchangeable Parts You Should Know

Master "no-cap" airbrushing for precision work and learn how interchangeable nozzles and needles boost versatility across Gaahleri models.

After we published our first article, many of you pointed out that using an airbrush without a needle cap (also known as "no cap") is an important topic worth exploring. So, we’ve prepared this detailed explanation, covering both no-cap spraying and interchangeable parts for Gaahleri airbrushes.

No-Cap Spraying

Some hobbyists choose to remove the needle cap while spraying because it offers certain benefits in specific situations:

Clearer View & Better Control: Without the cap, you can directly see the needle tip, making it easier to work on very fine lines or spray close to the surface.

Reduced Paint Build-up: Some users find that paint tends to accumulate inside certain caps, and removing it can reduce unwanted dry spray or spattering.

Easier Tip Cleaning: Without the cap, dried paint on the needle can be wiped off immediately, without needing to disassemble or remove any parts.

However, there are trade-offs:

Needle Protection Compromised: The primary purpose of the cap is to protect the needle from impacts or bending. Without the needle cap, the needle is more vulnerable.

Possible Change in Airflow: In certain designs, the cap slightly affects how air flows around the nozzle. Removing it could alter the airflow dynamics, though this isn’t typically noticeable in most standard spraying.

Tips: Some artists choose to remove the cap only when spraying fine details and reattach it for other uses. This strikes a balance between precision control and needle protection.

Gaahleri Airbrush Interchangeable Parts and Why They Matter

Airbrushes consist of several head system components that work together to influence spray performance. These components include:

Needle: Controls paint volume

Nozzle: Atomizes the paint

Nozzle cap / Needle cap: Shapes airflow and protects the needle

In some models, you can swap these parts to suit different needs, such as changing nozzle sizes for finer or broader spray patterns. However, be cautious:

These parts are often model-specific, meaning they are designed to work together for a specific airbrush design. Using mismatched parts can lead to inconsistent spray patterns or performance issues.

If you switch to a smaller needle or nozzle, you also need the corresponding nozzle cap. For example, a 0.2mm needle and nozzle require a 0.2mm nozzle cap, because the opening in the cap affects how the airflow forms around the paint tip.

While some parts appear interchangeable, using correctly matched components is crucial for consistent atomization and performance.

The 0.2mm and 0.3mm sets are interchangeable with each other, but they are not compatible with the TG series 0.5mm or 0.3mm sets. The TG series uses a different head system design and cannot be swapped directly.

TIPS:

Gaahleri

Needle – controls paint volume Nozzle – atomizes the paint Nozzle cap / Needle cap – shapes airflow and protects needle

In the Gaahleri Mobius series airbrushes, the 0.2 mm and 0.3 mm sets are interchangeable with each other, but they are not compatible with the TG series 0.5 mm or 0.3 mm sets. Those use a different head system design and cannot be swapped directly.
