In this guide, we’re going to look at the Swallowtail SD. We’ll cover the side-feed mechanics, how to maintain the needle, the disassembly process for deep cleaning, and the common mistakes you need to avoid to keep your visibility and spray patterns perfect.

Before we begin, let’s look at what’s in the box. The Swallowtail SD comes with the Swallowtail Airbrush Body, a 2/3 oz Gravity Paint Cup, and a 10 oz Metal Capped Siphon Cup. It is equipped with a 0.28mm needle and nozzle(installed) and includes a 0.5mm needle, nozzle, and Fan Cap for wider spraying. Lastly, you’ll find the instruction manual and a quick-disconnect male fitting.

Section Title: How To Clean The Swallowtail SD?

Cleaning a side-feed airbrush requires extra attention to the side-port connection. We recommend a flush every time you switch colors to prevent buildup in the attachment elbow.

To clean the Swallowtail SD, start by removing the side-mounted cup or siphon bottle. Wipe the connection port clean. If you were using the siphon setup, flush the bottle and the siphon tube with cleaner first. Attach a cup filled with airbrush cleaner and spray through.

Next, initiate the reverse flow process. Block the air from the nozzle using a rubber cap or your finger. Slowly pull back the trigger. This forces air and cleaner back through the side-feed port, agitating any paint hiding in the 8-MAC system. Repeat this until the liquid is clear. Pro Tip: Keep the side-feed cup lid on during this process to avoid splashes.

For deep cleaning, we recommend a full strip-down to protect the Ace Series high-toughness needle.

Unscrew the handle and loosen the needle chucking nut.

Pull the needle out slightly, then unscrew the air cap and nozzle cap to retrieve the nozzle.

Crucial Step: Push the needle forward and remove it from the front of the airbrush. Because this is an Ace Series needle, it is polished for smooth flow; pulling it through the back can drag paint into the spring sleeve and trigger housing, leading to a "mushy" trigger feel.

Unscrew the spring sleeve and remove the spring and chucking guide.

Remove the trigger and the air valve.

If soaking parts, always remove the rubber o-rings first. Use a small brush to clean the internal side-feed port where paint likes to hide.

Once dry, let’s put it back together.

First, insert the trigger and the needle chucking guide. Ensure the guide is at the correct angle so the trigger returns properly. Insert the spring and screw in the spring sleeve.

Slide the needle in from the front to the back. Place your chosen nozzle (0.28mm or 0.5mm) in, then secure the nozzle cap and air cap. Gently push the needle from the back until it seats—never force it. Secure the chucking nut, attach your chosen feed system, and you’re ready.

1. Incorrect Trigger Pressure: Applying excessive force to the trigger causes inconsistent flow. Use a light, controlled pull for steady paint application.

2. Cleaning Neglect: Failing to clean the side-feed port or siphon tube thoroughly leads to dried paint clogs. Ensure the siphon tube is clear before every session.

3. Thinning Issues: Using paint that is too thick or too thin causes poor atomization. Aim for a "milk-like" consistency for the 8-MAC system to function properly.

4. Static Nozzle Settings: Not adjusting the needle depth for your desired coverage. Match your nozzle size (0.28mm for detail, 0.5mm for broad) to the project.

5. Inconsistent Air Pressure: Forgetting to adjust PSI based on paint viscosity. Use 10–20 PSI for detail and 25–30 PSI for broad coverage.
